Veragua

Pan American Rally Volcano Concepcion Isla Ometepe and Lake Nicaragua

Costa Rica – Nicaragua – Costa Rica

Veragua was the name given in the 16th century to the Spanish colonial territories in Central America – and this classic car journey retraces their historic trails.

First things first:
Do you still associate Nicaragua with the Somoza dictatorship and the Contra war of the 1980s?
Relax – that’s history.
Today it means spectacular nature, safe travel, incredibly friendly people and refreshingly little mass tourism.
In short: colonial charm, relaxed atmosphere and absolutely impressive.

Starting and finishing at our Hacienda Equis near San José, Costa Rica, this rally combines colonial heritage, volcanic landscapes and authentic local encounters.

From Hacienda Equis we roll north toward the border of Nicaragua, where the adventure begins along the untouched southern shores of Lake Nicaragua. In San Carlos, we board a river boat and explore El Castillo de la Inmaculada Concepción, a legendary Spanish fort guarding the Río San Juan since 1673.

The route continues via Tipitapa to León, Nicaragua’s former capital – rich in colonial architecture, vibrant streets and authentic cafés. A visit to the iconic Flor de Caña rum distillery adds flavor to the experience.
Along the way, active volcanoes accompany us like silent giants on the historic Spanish gold route. One of the most impressive viewpoints: Puerto Momotombo on Lake Xolotlán – raw, powerful and unforgettable.

The journey then leads us to Granada, one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas. We stroll through its colorful streets, past historic plazas and grand churches, before boarding a boat to explore the Isletas of Lake Nicaragua – a labyrinth of over 300 volcanic islands scattered across the lake like emerald jewels.
As dusk approaches, we drive to the Masaya Volcano and stare directly into its glowing crater – an unforgettable encounter with the raw power of the earth.

Following the shoreline, our route passes the legendary Isla Ometepe with its twin volcanoes rising majestically from the lake. We continue toward the Pacific and reach San Juan del Sur, a relaxed coastal town where the best plan is no plan at all – a perfect beach day.

From there we return to Costa Rica, heading south via Santa Cruz and the secluded Playa Blanca before boarding the ferry across the Gulf of Nicoya to Puntarenas. A final scenic loop through Orotina and Santiago brings us back to a familiar place – Hacienda Equis, our home base.

Nearly 1,800 kilometers of pure classic driving – across breathtaking landscapes, through colonial history, past volcanoes and lakes, and always among genuinely wonderful people.
